Reshaping India’s Manufacturing Landscape

In the quest for economic rise and manufacturing upsurge, India is discovering its most powerful resource: the untapped potential of women. In fact, the blueprint for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ is actually being created on the factory floors, where women are demonstrating that their inclusion is not just a social imperative, but a strategic necessity. Niranjan Mudholkar endeavours to understand what’s driving this transformation.

“The women who are now “manning” production lines, driving innovation, and leading strategic initiatives are not just participants; they are change makers of a new era, proving that diversity is not just a social imperative, but a powerful engine for economic and industrial development.”

The thundering of machinery, once a symbol of male dominance, is now harmonizing with the voices of women reshaping India’s manufacturing landscape. From the complex circuits of electric vehicles to the robust production lines of automotive majors, women are not just working on the shop floor; they are engineering, innovating, leading and driving a transformative shift. This story delves into the powerful narratives of women who are breaking barriers, fueled by strategic investments, technological advancements and a collective vision for a more inclusive and prosperous future.

The Electric Revolution: A Catalyst for Change
“In recent years, there has been a clarion call for a transformative shift in the male-dominated automotive and manufacturing sector,” declares Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Founder and CEO of Kinetic Green. The rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs), with its emphasis on “electrical, electronic, and software-led innovation”, has created a unique opportunity. This technological leap demands fresh skills, opening doors for women to excel in core areas like R&D and manufacturing. Ms. Motwani emphasizes, “Women are increasingly sought after in India’s manufacturing and EV sectors for their precision, attention to detail, and ability to enhance product quality and operational efficiency,” she adds. This is not just about filling quotas; it’s about recognizing the strategic advantage women bring to the table.

Building a Nation, Brick by Brick
The “Make in India” initiative, coupled with the government’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat by 2047”, is propelling this change. Kirti Kabra, Director of RR Global, highlights the alignment between business and national goals: “This year’s UN theme, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,’ underscores a vital truth: empowering women propels industries, economies, and communities forward.” The Union Budget 2025-26, allocating a record ₹4.5 lakh crore to women’s economic empowerment, further underscores this commitment. Kabra asserts, “Today, we see women in manufacturing and business leadership who are redefining norms, and demonstrating that excellence transcends gender,” she adds.

Beyond Celebration: Meaningful Action
However, celebration alone is not enough. Phanindra Karody, Head of Bangalore Plant, Continental Automotive India, emphasizes the need for tangible changes: “Workplaces must prioritize health, safety, and well-being and offer clean environment, medical support, and accommodations for late or night shifts to the women employees.” Implementing gender-neutral policies, ensuring equal pay, and fostering a culture of respect are crucial. Amita Sonsale, HR Manager at Chicago Pneumatic Compressors (part of Atlas Copco Group), adds, “To ensure that the concerns raised by women in manufacturing are addressed, we must enforce equal pay, promote gender sensitivity, ensure health and safety, implement zero-tolerance harassment policies, offer flexible work conditions, and provide training and leadership opportunities.”

The Strategic Advantage of Diversity
The benefits of a diverse workforce are undeniable. “Diverse teams bring fresh perspectives, innovative problem-solving, and improved decision-making,” states Ms. Sonsale. Studies, like the Deloitte Industry study 2025, reinforce this, showing that “organizations with balanced gender representation perform better financially and culturally”. Moreover, in a consumer-driven market like India, “having women in the manufacturing workforce can be crucial in understanding market trends,” Ms. Sonsale points out.

Addressing the “Vanishing Women” Phenomenon
The Deloitte Industry study 2025: ‘Driving diversity and inclusion for women in the automotive industry’ also highlights the “vanishing women” phenomenon, a stark reminder of the challenges that remain. “We need to address the factors driving women out of the industry, to create a more equitable and successful future,” the Study warns. This requires addressing the unique needs of women across generations and creating supportive environments that foster growth and leadership.

Optimism and Opportunity
Despite the challenges, a strong undercurrent of optimism pervades the industry. The Deloitte study also notes that “many respondents are excited about the positive opportunities that lie ahead, particularly in the areas of sustainable mobility solutions, enhanced customer experiences enabled by AI and other emerging technologies, and the flexible working arrangements and inclusive leadership styles.”

A Call to Action
The journey towards gender equality in manufacturing is ongoing. As Ms. Kabra urges, “On International Women’s Day 2025, I urge businesses to move beyond celebration and take meaningful action toward gender inclusivity.” In fact, Ms. Sonsale has a very relevant suggestion: “By encouraging open communication, empowerment, mentorship opportunities, and addressing workplace challenges, organizations can empower women and ensure that their voices shape the future of the industry.” Indeed, by investing in women, showcasing role models, and addressing workplace challenges, we can unlock the full potential of a diverse workforce and forge a brighter, more equitable future for India’s manufacturing landscape. In essence, the narrative unfolding within India’s manufacturing sector is one of profound transformation. While challenges persist, the collective commitment to investing in women, fostering inclusive workplaces, and embracing technological advancements is forging a path towards a future where gender equality is not just an aspiration, but a tangible reality. The women who are now “manning” production lines, driving innovation, and leading strategic initiatives are not just participants; they are change makers of a new era, proving that diversity is not just a social imperative, but a powerful engine for economic and industrial development. As we move ahead, let us ensure that their voices continue to resonate, their contributions are celebrated, and their potential is fully realized, solidifying their pivotal role in building a prosperous and equitable India.
