Hindustan Zinc launches India’s First Taskforce on Nature – Related Financial Disclosures Report

The company is among the early adopters of Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures framework in India

“The launch of the country’s first TNFD report underscores our commitment to responsible nature conservation. We are actively pursuing decarbonization & environment conservation efforts, as evidenced by our nature protection initiatives. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations, we aim to create long-term value for stakeholders while contributing to a healthier planet.” Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, has recently launched its first TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) Report. With this, it became the first company in India to do so. The report encapsulates nature – related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities and allows for an assessment of the company’s direct operations and upstream critical supply chain on nature. The company is recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals & mining sector as per S&P CSA and remains dedicated to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner and aims to become Nature-Positive.

The TNFD report enables decision-makers to integrate nature-related risks and opportunities into strategic planning. This closely aligns with the TNFD guidelines to assess, disclose, and mitigate nature-related risks, with goals outlined in the Target 15 of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The report helps in identifying nature-related risks and assists the company in creating holistic sustainable strategies, which is based on the dual approach of mitigating and adapting towards climate change.

The company mitigates its carbon footprint by actively increasing renewable energy usage, improving operational efficiencies and transitioning to low-carbon fuels, while its massive afforestation drives create carbon sinks. During Van Mahotsav week, the company celebrated a milestone of planting over 20 lakh plants around its operational units in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand so far.

Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said, “The launch of the country’s first TNFD report underscores our commitment to responsible nature conservation. We are actively pursuing decarbonization & environment conservation efforts, as evidenced by our nature protection initiatives. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations, we aim to create long-term value for stakeholders while contributing to a healthier planet.”

Commenting on the launch of the report, technology partner Sandeep Kumar Mohanty, Partner – PwC, said, “Corporates all across the globe are recognizing the importance of conserving nature. Hindustan Zinc’s first TNFD report is a testimony of this. This report is going to pave the way for other corporates to understand, manage and report nature related risks.”

Emphasizing its commitment to biodiversity conservation, the company collaborates closely with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to protect and enhance biodiversity in the regions it operates. This aligns with Biodiversity Goal 5 of the company’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2025, reinforcing its commitment to protecting and enhancing biodiversity throughout the life cycle.

On the launch of the report, IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Country Representative Dr. Yash Veer Bhatnagar said, “IUCN, as a knowledge partner of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), is globally supporting its efforts. IUCN has collaborated with Hindustan Zinc Limited for a zonal level engagement to develop site-specific Biodiversity Management Plans. We are extremely delighted that the learnings from our engagement are used as primary source of the report, showcasing Hindustan Zinc’s environmental stewardship and commitment towards sustainable development. We congratulate Hindustan Zinc on their first TNFD report launch.”

The framework & recommendations announced in the month of September in 2023 by the TNFD council provide a market-led framework for organizations to report and act on evolving nature-related risks. Aligning with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the TNFD report utilizes the LEAP (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, and Prepare) process to systematically integrate environmental considerations into Hindustan Zinc’s operational and strategic frameworks.
